What Spills Over When You’re Bumped…Is What You Are Filled With!

Years ago while at a Women’s Retreat for my church, I wrote down this phrase inside my Bible, “What spills over when you’re bumped, is what you’re filled with.” Unfortunately I do not remember the speaker’s name – or the entire topic of her series presented that weekend – BUT this has stuck with me for years! I re-write it all of my Bibles – because I always want to be reminded of this.

In Luke 6: 45 Jesus says, “The good man brings good things out of the good stored up in his heart, and the evil man brings evil things out of the evil stored up in his heart. For out of the overflow of his heart his mouth speaks.”

Have you ever been guilty of speaking evil? I know I have! And if I am honest with myself – it is ALWAYS when I haven’t been spending time with my Savior (meditating on His written Word, and talking to Him). Time goes by so quickly and the demands of life just seem to leave no room to spend quality time with our Creator. We must recognize that being with Jesus is a conscious choice every day – like brushing our teeth, or having our coffee.

…For out of the overflow of his heart his mouth speaks. Try putting your name in the blanks, for out of the overflow of ______________’s heart, his/her mouth speaks.

Sometimes I have prided myself in the restraint I had – I just THOUGHT the evil – I didn’t say it! Although it isn’t as damaging to others by not speaking evil, it is still damaging to me.

So – this appears to be a heart issue. Jesus said we need to store up good in our hearts. David’s prayer should be ours – Psalm 51:10-12, “Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right, persevering, and steadfast spirit within me. Cast me not away from Your presence and take not Your Holy Spirit from me. Restore to me the joy of Your salvation and uphold me with a willing spirit” (The Amplified Bible)

Our clean hearts then need to read, listen, and DO His good Word. Is this a tough assignment? Only if we don’t have His Spirit living in us and only if we don’t ask for His help. Jesus says in Matthew 7:8 “For everyone who asks receives…”

Oh Lord, make our hearts clean and renew a right spirit within us by our obedience to your Word. Amen
